ABSOLUTE SANCTUARY
Jane Ribinskas
After recently running my 5xday retreat @ Absolute Sanctuary Detox & Yoga retreat Centre Koh Samui I highly recommend this retreat Centre for future Yoga teaches wanting to run an International retreat. From the very first contact with Claire Bostock I received prompt customer service. On arriving my students and my self were delighted to be met by Claire at the Koh Samui Airport. When arriving @ the resort we were taken care of immediately,we loved our rooms, the pool was so great to lounge around and enjoy a detox juice or snack in-between my program sessions in the Ocean Room studio. The peacefulness of the property was divine. We found the service food and detox juices delivered from the Love Kitchen were so healthy and alive .The detox services so complimented the Detox Programs I delivered including “The Knowing Flow” vinyasa sequences& Transformational Breathing program We all left in a natural bliss state. Thankyou Absolute Sanctuary for assisting in the Success of my retreat.

” just wanted to write to you to tell you how much I enjoyed staying at Absolute Sanctuary in March. The resort was amazing (although I do like a beer now and then, haha). The food was excellent and in particular the presentation. Your staff are top notch, in particular little Apple who I miss lots! I am also missing the hot weather, it’s getting onto winter in New Zealand now and becoming cold:( ”
Warmest Regards

I would like to share my experience at Absolute Sanctuary, as this may help other people plan their stay. I was a 55 year old man who had let myself go a lot. Way too much work, combined with over eating, had seen me climb to 114kg, and along with that I had become quite depressed. Having never done yoga in my life this was a bit daunting, as I decided on a 10 day yoga package and stay at Absolute Sanctuary. From the very first class I realised this was going to be good for me. The 2 teachers have very different styles, but I soon started to feel comfortable and just worked at my own pace. I particularly enjoyed the “hot” classes as I sweated buckets, and started to feel better in myself almost immediately. The food menu was quite restricted and at first looked very boring, but I found it fine. A strange thing started to happen, the more yoga I did the less appetite I had, and the better I felt!!!. The Sanctuary is a beautiful place ideally suited for relaxation. There is a fabulous pool but i can warn you that the middle of the day is VERY HOT!!!.( March/April ). The rooms are fine with good air con and internet but the tv’s are terrible!!!. Way too small and very few channels. The staff are incredibly friendly and go out of there way to help you at all times. The clinic staff are very professional and there is a very warm atmosphere about the whole resort.
After 10 days I really was feeling much better and was talked into a 7 day detox!!!!. I never thought it possible that I could go 7 days without food at the same time as having “colonics”, but I did it!!!, and felt 10 years younger at the end!!!. I’m not going to say it was easy, but with daily massages and beleif that this was cleansing my body the time soon went. At the end of 17 days I’m happy to say that I had lost 9.5kg and felt better than I had in years.
I was concerned about leaving and slipping back into my old lifestyle so I decided to stay longer. This was a great idea but I think I stayed a bit to long ( another 18 days ) as I started to get bored with the food and the relaxing!!!. This was my fault as Koh Samui has many attractions but having been here before I found myself just hanging about the resort. In the evenings I started going out for more meals and soon slipped into the “deserts” again. Luckily I think i’ve learned a lot about food, my life, my body etc since being here that I will live a much healthier life on my return home. I wanted to lose more weight but the main thing is I did not put any weight back on, so I feel now it is ” up to me!! “. In summary I can highly recommend Absolute Sanctuary as a life altering experience!!!

My husband and I ended up at the Absolute Sanctuary by chance, having had the first 8 days of our honeymoon gratis over at the Napasai resort, and searching online for something in the area where we could spend a few more days on the island, happened upon a deal on a room at Absolute – not knowing it was a detox/yoga center!
Despite this, and us being on our honeymoon, we had a wonderful time taking advantage of the spa and the Love Kitchen every chance we had. As a native New Yorker who loves to eat (and a vegetarian of 21 years), my culinary standards are high – perhaps unreasonably so on occasion. However, the food at the Love Kitchen is…just ridiculous. In a good way. In the kind of way that your brain can have some difficulty assimilating the experience your mouth is having. It might be a little mean to have such delicious offerings for detoxers who can’t partake, but we enjoyed it! We felt sort of bad enjoying ourselves so much in front of those who were fasting on broths, but it was hard to contain ourselves. After struggling to find 100% vegetarian food on Ko Samui, it was a joy and a relief and a pleasure to experience the Love Kitchen, particularly knowing that it was a completely animal-free kitchen.
The only negative comments we have about our experience at Absolute is that we wanted to take it with us! We definitely appreciate and respect the fact that the Sanctuary is about the experience of the Sanctuary, and the fact that (I assume) it makes a profit is not an immediately apparent focus. By that I mean – there is nothing in your face that says “money money money, give us your money!”
Thank you for the wonderful experience. The staff is lovely, and, as I may have mentioned – the food was excellent.

Being in the wellness industry in Hawaii, I can be a bit ‘picky’ when it comes to choosing where I want to spend my time. The Absolute Sanctuary with it’s deluxe accommodations, ‘aloha’ staff, and incredible detox program far exceeded any expectations I may have had. I was fortunate to participate in the pre-cleanse, Ultimate 7-day cleanse and the post-cleanse /liver flush for a total of 12 days at Absolute Sanctuary. Not only did I not want to leave, the completion of my very first detox program had me feeling at optimal level with my health, mind and spirit. Will I come back? I am counting the days.

” Give Yourself the Gift of wellbeing” your brochure suggests, and so you do. you gave us the gift of yoga, the gift of kindness, the gift of detox, the gift of looking good, the gift of detox, the gift of genuine kind & gracious people. We Will always cherish this vacation. Thank You!”

My wife and I recently returned from a 6 week vacation in Thailand. Our 1 week detox fast & cleanse program at the Absolute Sanctuary Spa was the highlight of the entire vacation. We felt like we breezed through the program which included daily colonics, yoga, swimming and massages. It provided an ideal balance of education, effectiveness and comfort. Our Energy levels remained high and our sense of well-being increased daily. We also came away with a wealth of healthy habits & tips, picked up from our daily spa routine, the staff and other guests. I highly recommend this program to anyone who is serious about their long term overall health.
Cheers,

“When I arrived at the “Absolute Sanctuary” I was literally glowing with toxic waste, feeling lethargic and overweight and even a bit down after a particularly ‘merry’ Christmas. People who know me will testify to the unliklihood of my completing an 8 day ‘detox fast’ complete with colonics and regular yoga (I’d never done a ‘downward dog’ in my life – at least not knowingly).

The pool is heavenly to lie by whilst soaking up the gorgeous weather and the rooms are a joy to retire to – each with a lovely balcony to sit on enjoying the view down the mountain to the blue sea beyond. The funky Moroccan decor is a welcome change from the ubiquitous ‘spa look’ of other resorts. At the “Absolute”, you CAN be fabulous while you fast!
I’ve come back 11lbs lighter, as brown as berry and (some might say) almost irritatingly cheerful. It’s a cold and gloomy UK January but thanks to ‘Absolute” I’ve returned filled with resolve to carry on what was started and ensure that the rest of the year continues as well as it began.
I’ll be back and if you haven’t been, GO!
CHIVA SOM
“I cannot possibly address this to one person alone. You all have been exemplary as hospitality providers. The best thing is that you did not work as parts of your duties, you put your warm and caring hearts, your souls and MIND into it that makes Chiva-Som my top favourite destination. I must not forget that the credits for having such staff and training them so well has to be given to the upper management too.
Hats off to all, from the porters out front to the reservation, reception, spa, restaurant and cleaning crews.
Hope to see all of you again soon. Thank you for such a memorable stay, from the bottom of my heart.”
Yasmin Jafferi, June 2011
“Thanks to you & your team for making our 1st visit to Chiva Som such a just a wonderful one. You were mentioning how you came as a guest almost 8 years ago when you were offered the position of General Manager and promptly came back after a month to make Chiva Som your home! You also mentioned that over half your guests are repeat guests – after our visit, we realise why guests keep wanting to come back. All of us will also fall into that category and you will hopefully see us sometime soon.
Please pass on our compliments to the chef & his team for preparing some delicious food that was so healthy – we were 2 vegetarians in our group and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I believe that the Chiva Som wellness team came to Mumbai sometime last year to market the treatments, etc. May I suggest that you include Kolkata as a stop in your next India Tour and also add your chef to the team. I spoke to your Executive Chef and mentioned this idea to him as well.
Some of the treatments were amazing – I particularly enjoyed the Chi-Nei-Tsang and Watsu treatments. Some of us enjoyed the kinesis and classes as well. Our sincere thanks to the spa & fitness team for making our visit truly special.
We must mention the excellent and efficient service that was displayed by everyone. We were not told a “No” for anything. The restaurant staff – Tum, La, Udi, June and so many others whose names we do not recall – were amazing and anticipated all our special and individual requests after the 1st day itself.
The best part is that we are all taking steps forward to ensure that we come back to Chiva Som healthier than how we left it!”

“Take advantage of every class/therapy on offer and you won’t have time to draw breath. There are too many places where you can be so fruitfully occupied, from Tai Chi at dawn to the final abs, butts and thighs class of the day. The therapists are outstanding.”

“My husband and I recently spent 3 wonderful days at Chiva Som after being lucky enough to win the trip at a Business Chicks networking breakfast in Perth, Australia. The feeling of peace and tranquility was lovely and I have to commend the immaculately kept gardens and outdoor areas – beautiful. The staff were superb, giving exeptional service and attention at all times. The food, the treatments, the activities were all fabulous. I just wish we could have stayed longer. Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to stay at Chiva Som.”

“My health and wellness consultant was a reassuringly healthy and well looking Australian lady called Nadine. Nadine is a naturopath which is a medical practitioner who encourages the body to heal itself…With Nadine’s help, I chose from a weekly timetable of activities which Chiva-Som’s 74 therapists, many of whom are Thai with names as exotic as the activities they run…[But] the clearest evidence of health consciousness at Chiva-Som is not so much in what you do – or what is done to you – but what you eat. There are two top class eateries; the international Emerald Room which at breakfast boasts an astounding array of exotic fruits, cereals and spices or the beachside chic of Taste of Siam.”

“Chiva-Som changed my life. In just three days. I’ve loosened up my mind and overhauled my diet (and lost a kilo or two – amazing what minimal sugar does to your weight). Above all, it’s made me realise the importance of taking time out of our crazy-busy lives to nurture our minds, bodies and spirits for the sake of our long-term health. With its accommodating staff and tranquil vibe, Chiva-Som is the perfect setting for rediscovering life’s fundamentals. Oh bless Chiva-Som, the haven of my life. I’ll be back.”

Its name is a mantra among the spa-faithful, who have been won over by its one-to-one ratio of therapists to guests, amazing treatment list, and its peaceful setting. Collette Dinnigan at Chiva-Som, luxury spa resort
“Chiva-Som is a luxury spa resort south of Bangkok. It is my haven. I have been twice and I am really hoping to go again soon. The food is all organic; its just sensational. I have three big meals a day, no alcohol for a week, a massage each day and do very little else. It’s a beautiful environment and peaceful, relaxing, energising and health. I feel very comfortable when I’m there by myself; they leave you alone but the level of service is even better than
Asia’s usual high standards.”
Collette Dinnigan in The Sun-Herald 2007

KAMALAYA
During my stay, I read in a book the quote “live for the present, let the future look after itself” and that’s actually what Kamalaya allowed me to do. Every single day I looked in the mirror and saw ‘me’ coming to life again and enjoying the present. Thanks for making it a special and promising start to 2010.
Simone Voroegop, The Netherlands. January 2010
My goals were to detox and to rest. Now that I am leaving I know I not only reached my goals but my stay at Kamalaya also changed my life. I hope next time I can set my goals, new goals, and develop further.

There are not enough words to describe what Kamalaya is – you just have to feel it. There is this magic all over the place and the longer you stay the more you keep it inside yourself to take it home.

Danielle thinks the Personal Yoga Synergy program is perfect for both beginners and more experienced yoga levels. “I think the yoga course is perfect for beginners. Because I think when you’re first starting yoga that’s the most crucial time, because you’re laying the foundation for your future practice, so if you can have 1-to-1 teaching at this kind of high-quality level, I think that’s the perfect way to start yoga. Even for people who are more experienced, it’s a real treat and a real luxury to have someone – just one teacher – who can really target your weak points, and just give you complete attention.” This place has forever changed my perspective regarding so many different areas of life.
Karrie Kelly, USA. April 2010
Such a caring environment! A very special place to discover how best to care about oneself and let others take care of us.
Charlotte Diez. March 2010
Truly the most wonderful place I have visited; the service, attention to detail and beautiful setting are outstanding. You are instantly immersed into a tranquil, therapeutic way of being. This place and the treatments really do have magical and restorative healing powers.
Helena Oades, UK. February 2010
“After achieving a high level of success but being disconnected for many years, I found my heart and reignited my spirit at Kamalaya.”
- T. Harv Eker, Author of the #1 New York Times best selling book “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind”
Kamalaya is truly magic! The Kamalaya magic revealed itself to us subtly, slowly, then powerfully. Everything from exquisite grounds to skillful therapies and treatments to astounding cuisine is accomplished with such love. It’s an authentic place at the highest level, created with real simplicity and great care.
Rebecca Frischkorn, USA. December 2009
We looked for something different than just a hotel but did not expect to have found paradise. Every single person in Kamalaya is smiling and very friendly and they are all doing an awesome job. Thanks for a fantastic experience – we will be back.
Andrea Huchner, Germany. November 2009
‘Reconnect’ is the title of the brochure I was given when I arrived two weeks ago. I would have never thought it to be possible, and here I am leaving today filled with so much love and light for myself and everything around me. Thank you Kamalaya for putting your magical spell on me.
Nadja Reiche, Oct 2009
Arriving at Kamalaya felt like coming home. I came with the sole purpose of focusing on my health and hoped for spiritual healing also. What I got far exceeded my expectations and I reconnected with my spirit and was completely re-energised. By the end of my stay I was at home – within me.
Marcela Zeman, Australia. September 2009

They say you can only visit heaven once in a lifetime. Here at Kamalaya you can experience heaven every moment of every day. Probably the best uplifting experience of my life. Thank you Kamalaya, you are a secret treasure.
Tracey Pye, UK. April 2009
I truly believe that when you receive a treatment at Kamalaya, the therapist is not just doing their job; they actually do care. There is a definite energy transference. This caring energy is also conveyed in every smile you receive here.
Stephen Randall, Australia. April 2009
I arrived at Kamalaya hoping for a rest and to feel better; I left knowing that my stay here has changed my life, and I anticipate that all this positive change will grow and develop. I’m already planning when I can return – best holiday ever. I go home a new woman.

THE LONGEVITY RESORT, MONCHIQUE, PORTUGAL
“5 star venue and service, yes it was.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 March 2012
My wife and I have just returned from a 7 night stay through Voyage Prive (check this out) on a b&b basis. The hotel facilities, staff, service and accommodation was first class. We only ever stay in 5 star facilities across the world, and this place merits its 5 star status. Food was first class, the breakfast had everything you wish for with all the hot food you require cooked to order. The rooms are all suits, book a mountain view room, with good size bedroom with en suite, large lounge area with top of the range hob, oven, fridge and microwave, and additional shower room/toilet. Our deal included breakfast, a car and entry to spa where you can either purchase a treatment or just use facility of health pool, Turkish or sauna. You do need a car as you are 20 mins from portmiao or the fabulous Alvor ( for restaurants) but the benefit is you are up in the hills with all the clear air. Fantastic stay which I would highly recommend as alternative to beach places.

Longevity Monchique”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 March 2012
Stayed from the 10th to the 17th of March 2012 at Longevity Monchique. Pateo Suites lack privacy as it faces the other suites across it. All 195 rooms are suites. We were up graded to a coastline view with large garden terrace. The view were great and the living room/kitchen were large. The bed very comfortable and wide, 2m, with a bathroom and a separate shower/toilet in the hall way. Free wifi in common areas only.
All the staff were friendly. It was very very quiet during our stay but it is fine for us as we were chilling out. The American pool table amused us for hours during the evening.
Buy the package 20euros for unlimited films access during the whole stay.
The restaurant is expensive with unchanging menu, but the place is nice and romantic. The restaurant just on the right as you walk down the entrance street about 100 yards from the reception give excellent basic home cooking food for half the price. The fish stew is excellent.
We eat half at the hotel and half at that restaurant.
The breakfast on the terrace is nice with hot food on order (free) from the menu.
The spa treatments, we have facial, massage and body scrubs, were excellent but a bit expensive but not excessively so. Nice setting. Pool free access for the whole day when having spa treatment other wise 25 euros each which is not worth it as you will be bored after 2 hours. Ask for the room temperature in the spa pool to be reduced if it is too hot.
Easy to get to from the airport and the village Caldaz and small town Monchique both 10 minutes drive were nice to have coffee and cakes. There is a SPAR supermarket on the way to Monchique for buying snacks to put in the fridge, just 7 minutes drive.
The top of Monchique, Fiao, is worth visiting, very windy.
The new shopping centre “Aqua” on the edge of Portimao some 20 minutes drives was fun to go to. The Chinese buffet was well worth the money,10euros, on the top floor at Aqua’s food court. The hotel is excellent for couple who wants to chill out and not mix socially too much, but it is not ideal for kids unless if its busy during school holidays.
The hotel is stylish, two years old in operation? great potential. Will come again during March time. Jao (not sure of spelling) the Client liaison officer is very friendly and helpful indeed.
Sunny days 24 deg C except for one day when its cloudy but warm during 7 days stay.

Luxurious mountain hotel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 March 2012
Returned today from the Longevity after an incrediby cheap deal through Travel Republic, we are still incredulous that the price we paid afforded such a luxurious 5* hotel!
The hotel is unmissable, coming up from the Portimao road towards Monchique, about an hours drive from Faro airport. Despite arriving 3 hours earlier than check in stated, there was no problem checking in, we had also been upgraded to a mountain view suite.
Very pleasant reception staff, offered iced tea before being shown to room with a brief history of the building of the resort and what facilities were on offer (plenty, but extremely expensive!)
Suite was beautiful, lounge area with patio doors opening onto stunning mountain views. Same view from bedroom, huge double bed, plasma screen tv. Two bathrooms with power showers and daily complimentary toiletries including bath and shower gel with essential oils.
Integral kitchen included everything, from dishwasher to corkscrew. The whole suite itself was light, airy, and very luxurious. Air conditioning was powerful and noise-free.
Some previous reviews have mentioned the design of the hotel is a little confusing, would have to agree, though it doesnt take long to navigate.
We had chosen the bed and breakfast option, the restaurant opens from 07:30, pretty much everything you could want is on offer, from typical cereals to loads of fruit, meat, eggs, breads, pastries, even a juicer to make your own juice. It was especially nice, on the 4 mornings we had warm sunshine, to sit on the terrace overlooking the pool and the valley.
Surprisingly, some mornings we had the restaurant to ourselves, the hotel seemed almost completely empty at times,no one at the bar, the pools, or even sitting on the other balconies which were visible to our room. We were usually out and about by 9am though, returning around 4, so it may have been busier during this time.
What we wanted from the holiday was a completely relaxing, stress-free, comfortable break. The hotel gives you all this and more. Would definately recommend it to family and friends and would definately return here. The spa treatments are over our budget, but the comfort of the rooms, a great bath after long days driving up and down the Algarve, a couple of glasses of wine looking at the mountains opposite, and we felt like we’d had a few spa treatments anyway!
Highly recommended for a completely peaceful, very luxurious break with fantastic mountain air, great food and location perfect for exploring the whole Algarve coast.

“Unique architecture with a relaxing vibe makes memorable Algarve stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 March 2012
This was my second stay at the Longevity Wellness Resort Monchique, after a near perfect first stay last year I cautious about returning. Would they be able to replicate their first performance which I thought was probably due to the ‘honeymoon’ period of a new business, but I was pleasantly surprised!!
On arrival the staff were welcoming and as helpful as possible. We had been given a twin room despite booking a double, this was soon changed with no fuss to a great double room with stunning panoramic views.
The hotel as a whole was highly maintained despite being at nearly full capacity this time and obtains its original quirkiness with style. The rooms were tastefully decorated, laid out in an apartment style with a separate living room. The rooms were extensively cleaned every day with eco-friendly fresh linen change options. Our room came with a high standard of cooking and kitchen facilities if you wished to cook, although as on holiday this was not an option we took!
The facilities at the hotel were exceptional, my partner and I had a massage which was a great experience and worth the money in the luxury spa, every aspect was catered for from robe and slippers in the locker before the treatment to a quiet space for a drink following treatments, the whole experience was relaxing and highly professional.
The buffet breakfast at the hotel was one of the best I have ever had, and the option to eat on the balcony with the amazing views over the valley in the warm morning sunshine only adds to the experience and I would highly recommend it. The breakfast itself ranges from fruits, to cold meats, breads and pastries with the options of cooked breakfasts if requested, nothing was too much trouble. We chose to eat dinner off resort but the restaurant looked impressive.
Overall a peaceful, luxurious and complete resort with facilities to suit all needs, although I do feel it is more of an adult friendly hotel. The only down side is the location as it is a short drive to the nearest town and about a 10 minute drive to the beach but the upside of this is the fantastic views from every angle of the hotel’s mountain setting.
A great hotel and a memorable experience I would definitely recommend for those looking for a relaxing, distinctive place to stay in the Algarve.

“Most relaxing hotel that I have ever stayed in!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 February 2012
My partner and I stayed at this hotel for a three night weekend in February 2012. As soon as we arrived to the hotel, we were treated in a five star manner. My partner had arranged the guest services team to put rose petals in a heart shape form on our king size bed and the room was beautifully decorated with rose petals and candles everywhere!
The hotel takes up the entire mountain, which it is built on and it gives spectacular views. We had initally booked a suite with land view, but my partner upgraded to a mountain view suite, which gave us spectacular views outside of all of our windows, we could even see the sunrise from our bedroom window.
This hotel isn’t only a 5 star hotel, it is also a medical spa. Unfortunately we didn’t experience any spa procedures, as they were quite expensive, but we still felt the relaxing and reflemishing air that the hotel had. It definitely is the perfect place for relaxation, quietness, and peace of mind. The hotel has two heated pools and one non-heated pool. One of the heated pools, which is together with sauna is free, the other one which is in the spa, is 25eruos per person per day and the non-heated pool is also free.
Breakfast was AMAZING. The entire side of the restaurant is one big window and the view with the morning sun shining through the mountains is spectacular. Breakfast is buffet style, but there is also a hot foods menu, which has omlets, bagels, pancakes, waffles, eggs and other items on it as well. The buffet also includes a table where there are some fruits and vegetables and a machine where you can make your own freshly squeezed juice. Overall, the breakfast was unforgetable and the breakfast staff as well. Sergio who was in charge of the breakfast was very professional, friendly and always made us smile.
We did not try the hotel restaurant for lunch or dinner, but there is this restaurant just across the street from the hotel, which is family owned and the food there is delicious! We ate there twice during our weekend stay, and the food could not have been better. We also tried other near by restaurants and they were all amazing. The food in that region itself is worth the trip.
We didn’t book a car in advance, and because I am 19, we were not able to book it at reception, but reception really tried their hardest to find a car hire place for us, unfortely all car hire places required to be 21 or over, but at the end they offered their guest services manager David to take us around, which was definitely an extra step and exceeded our expectations of the already amazing costumer service. We did not take his offer, but we still very much appreciated it.
The town Monchique is about 7km from the hotel, it is about one and a half hours walk, which isn’t that bad on a sunny day, the only thing that you have to consider is that there is no walking space on the road, but there aren’t that many cars, so it is not as bad. The town is very traditional and also has some nice cafes. You definitely have to try a freshly squeezed orange juice. I had it in a cafe in Monchique and it was soooo good! I probably won’t be able to drink orange juice anywhere else in the world anymore, it just doesn’t even compare to the fresh orange juice in Monchique!
Overall our weekend stay in Portugal was fantastic and the choice of the hotel could not be better! I would definitely recomend the hotel for romatic stays, but if you also rent a car, then I would recomend it to anybody!
Relaxing and Rejuvinating stay guaranteed! Best hotel that I have ever stayed in!

This hotel is truly remarkable.Situated in idyllic setting with spectacular views. The bedroom/suite we choose had a woodland view.It really has everything for a relaxing getaway. The breakfast is very good with great selection to choose from, however the dinner did not compare to Kellys resort hotelhttp://www.kellys.ie/I,Ireland which is full all year round because of its delicious food.Because it is quite isolated..this is an important as is inconvenient to leave, and was our only complaint.from the moment we arrived, the staff were excellent and the hotel is fabulous.I would highly reccomend this for anybody exhausted and looking for a relaxing break.it is well deserved of its 5 star status.

Our staff recently visited the Longevity Wellness Resort in Monchique, Portugal. Read about their expereinces below. We will be adding the Longevity Wellness Resort to our list of featuted properties in January 2012 and will be delighted to answer any questions you may have in the meantime.
Astra and Lesley’s Wellbeing Weekend! – by Astra Beadle.
On the run up to Christmas, like most people at this time of the year, I find myself feeling bone tired and really and truly ready for a well deserved break. My days are spent working hard to book all your lovely holidays, my nights are spent trying to get my house straight and racing around various friends and family’s houses catching up ready for the Christmas break, with my weekends spent trawling the shops or the net in search of that all important Christmas gift.
So when the opportunity came along to experience The Longevity Wellness Resort, a genuine Medical Spa located in the mountains of Portugal’s Algarve with my colleague Lesley, I jumped at the chance. Three whole days dedicated to the rejuvenation of mind body and soul – just what the doctor ordered!
After a short 2 hour 50 minute flight with Easyjet from Gatwick, we landed in Faro Airport to be met by the resort’s chauffeur service for our short 45 minute car ride to our final destination.
The Longevity Wellness Resort in Monchique opened its doors in the spring of 2010, their mission to help guests to take care of their most precious asset; their health. Their goal: to help achieve positive lifestyle changes through optimal physical, intellectual and spiritual balance.
The resort is designed with nature and sustainability in mind, with large walls of windows throughout the resort to provide warmth in the winter months and the feeling of light and space throughout the year. The decor reflects the outdoor space and blends modern living with nature. All work to build the resort was carried out by local contractors; food is locally produced and sourced with the Longevity resort being the main employer for the local area.
On arrival we were greeted at reception with a glass of Monchique Thermal water flavoured with fresh oranges and given a locally sourced delicious apple, before being shown to our suites. All the accommodation at Longevity is suite style, with bedroom, living room, fully equipped kitchen and 2 bathrooms, all suites are identical. The differing factor between the suites is the views and outdoor areas; you can choose between views of the grounds or surrounding mountains both of which have outdoor balconies or you can choose a suite with views of the Atlantic Ocean off in the distance and an outdoor patio area.
Once we settled into our suites it was time to head down to the spa to be given our own personal wellness programme. I was to have a Longevity Scrub, Biophysical and Nutritional Evaluation, and Pressotherapy. We were also able to make full use of Longevity’s enrichment program, a time table of Pilates, water aerobics, nature walks and ball stretch. Along with full access to the swimming pools, Turkish Bath and Sauna.
I was eager to get started, so quickly donned my cossie, robe and slippers and headed over to the Indoor Pool, Sauna and Turkish bath, where I spent a very relaxing couple of hours, so much so that I fell asleep by the pool and did not notice Lesley leave me to get a drink!
My first treatment was the Longevity Scrub, which is an aromatic full body exfoliation followed by a relaxing massage. The purpose of this treatment is to prepare the body for detox, cleanse the skin and relax mind and body. I was given the choice of lavender, lemon or orange; I chose orange and settled onto the heated bed for my 50 minute treatment, one of the most relaxing I have experienced. After the treatment I was shown to their relaxation area and given a soothing cup of herbal tea.
After my relaxing afternoon it was time to get ready for dinner. Dinner at Longevity is not a formal affair but the service is impeccable. For those guests booked onto a spa program the choice of meals is well balanced and healthy with homemade vegetable soup to start, choice of Chicken, Turkey, Tofu or Fish accompanied by a good selection of freshly prepared vegetables. For dessert some nice fresh fruit is on offer. Of course whilst Longevity Resort promotes wellbeing and healthy living, for those looking for a naughty but very nice glass of wine, a heartier meal or dessert, this is by no means forbidden and there is a full menu offering a variety of other wine and food options*.
After dinner you could choose to take part in a further enrichment session, a showing of a popular movie or stay in the restaurant and listen to the soothing sounds of a Jazz Saxophonist. Lesley and I chose to indulge in a sneaky glass of wine and listen to the musician before heading back to our luxuriously large and comfortable beds.
The next morning it was time to head down to the Medical Spa where we were to be given our Biophysical and Nutritional Evaluations, these evaluations are give to every guest experiencing a spa program at The Longevity Resort, in order that treatments, meals and exercise plans are tailored to each individuals results. I have to admit I was slightly nervous about these sessions as I already knew that I am overweight, do hardly any exercise and eat mostly rubbish! But… in for a penny in for a pound, perhaps I would learn something that I didn’t already know.
The Biophysical Examination started with me standing on a computerised weighing scale with the assessor putting my height and age into the machine. This was to determine my weight and BMI. My weight is 76kg (12st! Eek!) With my ideal weight 45kg (7st eek, eek!) My BMI was a higher than average 30.2 with the healthy range for my age and height being between 20 – 26.
After this, the assessor asked me to take all my jewellery and metal hair slides off and lie on his couch, I was then attached by sticky pads and wires to his computer by my hands and feet, the purpose of this excersize was to measure my overall body composition by sending electronic waves through my body.
Once these tests were completed they were sent to the Resort’s very own nutritionalist, who sat with me to discuss my results and help put together a plan to help achieve a healthier life.
The results of my body composition test were very interesting. The test measured my over all weight, fat mass, muscle mass, water make up, non fat tissue, cellular mass and extra cellular mass. It also measures your body’s metabolism and how evenly spread out your weight is around your body.
The results showed that my weight at 76.3kg and my height (5ft 2’’) put me in the first stage of obesity (oh crumbs!), I was told however, that my muscular and non fat tissue (bones) were heavier than average, which meant that I would never weigh the 45kg (7st) the BMI machine would like me to (phew!), that in fact my ideal weight should be more like 60kg (9st 10.5lb).
I also learnt that my metabolic age is at 45 and not at my actual 30 years and that my weight is very evenly spread across my body, which whilst I am heavier than I should be is positive news, as the more evenly spread my weight, the less likely I am to develop health issues in later life.
My nutritionalist then spent a lot of time talking with me about my current lifestyle and diet, asking me questions about my likes and dislikes and educating me on a healthier diet and exercise regime. She suggested eating smaller amounts more often throughout the day based on high protein, high fibre, reduced salts and carbohydrates with increased amounts of fruit and vegetables. In terms of excersize as I really dislike visiting the gym, I was advised to increase my levels of cardiovascular excersize (aerobics, dancing, running, power walking etc…) and incorporating this with some kind of pilates or yoga.
Even though the results showed that I was erring on the unhealthy side (something I already knew) I felt very positive and motivated by the fact that changing my diet and adding more exercise will achieve very positive results.
Based on my results, I decided to have a blow out Christmas before starting a fresh in the New Year and yes, I am very aware of the New Year New You cliché, my intentions really are to start making changes gradually, as I want to feel less tired and more attractive – What woman doesn’t?!
After these evaluations I felt very motivated as I think did Lesley, so we decided to take part in the Nature Walk on the enrichment schedule. The area that the Longevity Resort is in is very beautiful, set amidst rich green forest and mountainscape. Our guide took us out further up into the mountains passing beautiful scenery before reaching a natural spring tap where we were able to stop and take a sip and enjoy its soft taste. After our short stop we carried on to the village around Caldas de Monchique an old Roman Spa before returning back to Longevity.
After the nature walk I spent a very pleasant couple of hours out on my patio reading a good book, taking in some more of the fresh mountain air, before heading up for dinner.
My final morning at The Longevity Resort saw me back at the Medical Spa for my Pressotherapy session. On receiving my wellness plan at the beginning of my stay I was very puzzled by what this treatment would be, the therapist explained that this treatment is a way of assisting the body’s natural toxin clearing functions through stimulation of the lymph nodes in the lower body to make their way up flushing out the liver along the way.
This treatment was not the relaxing experience I found the body scrub to be; it was more like a visit to the doctor. I was asked to change into paper pyjama bottoms with built in feet. The therapist then helped me into the Pressotherapy suit, which essentially looked like a big blood pressure suit, encasing my legs and lower body up to my waist. Once settled the therapist took my blood pressure and set the machine to start. The machine started by injecting air into the suit starting at my feet and ankles and making its way in stages up to my waist before deflating and starting the cycle again. Once I got over my initial nerves at being in the suit I soon relaxed into it and began to enjoy the sensations.
Once the treatment was over, the therapist explained that whilst the outwardly physical changes would be very subtle the internal physical changes would noticeable. This treatment can affect people in different ways but most people experience a higher than normal need to visit the bathroom and in my case this certainly proved to be the case along with a case of acid reflux. I was happy with this though as it proved to me that this treatment was indeed successful and had managed to rid me of some of those toxins!
Following the treatment, we had time for a quick spot of lunch before meeting our driver to take a very relaxed Lesley and Astra back to the airport for our flights home.
If given the opportunity to visit Longevity again, I would certainly jump at the chance and would like to do a full week’s detox program.

The Longevity Resort, Monchique, Portugal – By Lesley Scutt
Autumn was turning to Winter, the days were getting shorter and I started to wish I could shift that extra weight, feel better and more energised as the party Season approached.
I needed something I didn’t know what to change my attitude and feel better and happier. Problem solved. I got the opportunity to go to the Longevity Resort and Spa in Monchique for the weekend.
Here I was weighed, analysed and painlessly advised that being overweight there was a simple solution. I was given a programme to follow in little simple exercises and diet changes to make.
The water at this village in Portugal is very good for you as it is PH 9.5 . The hotel supply is the local water and is available at every meal. I enjoyed the spa facilities, the gym and the swimming pools to start my healthy regime. The Resort organises Nature walks around the area , which I took part in and they were not too long about 40 minutes to an hour long. There were Pilates classes but I did not have time to do them. It is not all wellbeing if you don’t want to, as there was a nice balance of activities including a cinema film most evenings. I did enjoy my wine at dinner.
The rooms are spacious and suite only with 2 bathrooms, so they are roomy enough for a family together. Some rooms face the mountains, some a courtyard but mine faced the sea, although it was a long way off. The Resort is 3 linked buildings with plenty of stairs and lifts. You can’t get lost as there was always someone around to ask or press the star in the lift and you ended up in Reception.
Free water and fruit was always set out here for guests to enjoy. It was very peaceful everywhere, with an air of calm and tranquillity. Soft music and colours of the outside blended with the glass that was on all corridors to let the natural light in. There are spaces to eat and drink in good weather outside and plenty inside when it’s not. The sports bar has a water menu so you could try different waters from around the world, but the tea and cake was lovely. One of my treatments was a rain massage. Just imagine a hot shower lying down and a massage at the same time. Very relaxing I nearly fell asleep. The water keeps you warm all through the full body massage. Afterwards I was so relaxed. I slept well that night.
Dinner held a nice surprise as there was a musician who played soft saxophone tunes while I ate. The food was tasty and beautifully presented. Always healthy and well balanced. I stayed 2 days and left feeling sorry to be going home but I feel sure I will be going back, if only to see if my changes made any difference. See you next year.
