Just 45km east of Bali, Lombok is nevertheless very different. Still relatively unspoilt, the beaches are superior to those on Bali and the level of communication is substantially lower. Furthermore, Lombok's drier climate is a distinct advantage during the rainy season from December to May. Lombok, named for the island's well known Lombok (chilli pepper), is home to two cultures; the Balinese Hindu who live in the western regions and the Sasak Muslims who live in the central and eastern regions. Most visitors are introduced to Lombok by way of Ampenan, Cakranegara and Mataram - the string of towns that make up the most populated area on this serene island.
